Junior PD Academy taking applications

Applications are now being accepted for the Manteca Police Department and Manteca Boys and Girls Club three-week Target E Junior Police Academy.

Youth scholarships

Lathrop Parks and Recreation is organizing youth scholarships for local children, 18 years old and younger, to pay for recreation department programs.

Applications are available at Lathrop City Hall, 390 Towne Centre Drive, or at www.ci.lathrop.ca.us.

Approved families will be eligible for a maximum award of $500 per fiscal year, July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2010.

Volunteers needed to sell fireworks

The Manteca Historical Society is looking for volunteers to work its fireworks booth through July 4 at midnight.

The city of Manteca will officially allow the sale of fireworks in the city beginning at noon Sunday, June 28. More than 70 volunteers will be needed, and most shifts will be about two hours.

Lathrop’s birthday bash

The city of Lathrop will celebrate its 20th birthday on Wednesday, July 1, with a family fun day from

4 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Valverde Park on Fifth Street.

The evening will include activities for the whole family, including music, games and more.

Cat lovers reach out for help

Happy Pet Owners, a nonprofit organization that seeks to spay or neuter stray cats in the Lathrop area, is looking for help from pet lovers. The group seeks donations of wet or dry cat food, beds, crates and traps. Anyone interested in making a tax-deductible donation may contact the group.
